QoEMCS at EuroITV 2012

In the framework of the EuroITV 2012 (July 4 2012 @Berlin, Germany) the workshop of QoE for Multimedia Sharing will take place in parallel. The workshop is supported by Qualinet Cost action and I participate also in the Technical Program Committee (TPC). I believe that it is quite interesting to be supported by the QoE-related colleagues.

Conference Objective

Multimedia applications are becoming more and more part of our everyday life. With the fast development of social networks and exchange platforms, users interact with each other through multimedia content, from different places, using different platforms. In order to make these applications available and successful, all the elements involved in the chain between multimedia content production and consumption have to work together with one goal in mind : maximising the Quality of Experience on the user’s side. This global issue requires taking into account a high variability of devices, networks, users and consumption scenarios, while addressing technological constraints related to the available resources in terms of network capacities, computation power and storage. In order to gain more knowledge on the provision and assessment of Quality of User Experience, new parameters have to be considered, such as from the psychophysical and environmental context. These efforts are further justified by the emergence of new multimedia concepts and applications, such as 3DTV, Free Viewpoint TV and Mobile TV, which include complex interactions with the users and with their environment. The QoEMCS workshop has been part of the last two editions of EuroITV. The third edition will once again focus on QoE and multimedia interactions, centered around the evaluation and optimization of interactions between users across different places and platforms.

In recent years, it has been realized that the success of multimedia services or applications relies on the analysis of the entire user experience (UX). The relevance of this paradigm ranges from IPTV to video-on-demand systems offering professional TV and user-generated content that is consumed and produced ubiquitously. To obtain a pleasurable and ubiquitous user experience a large amount of aspects have to be taken into account. Major challenges in this context include the identification of relevant UX factors and the quantification of their in influence on Quality of Experience (QoE).

In the particular scenario of ubiquitous production and consumption of content, context awareness and assessment of users’ expectations play an essential role. This is further justified by the emergence of new multimedia
enhancement techniques, notably 3DTV and Free Viewpoint.
In the support of ubiquitous QoE the acquired knowledge on the context and on identified parameters affecting users’ experience could be used to improve multimedia applications and their associated content delivery mechanisms.

* Workshop objectives
The objective of this workshop consists in collecting and developing know-ledge on the following three main topics defining the session structure
of the workshop:

– Context awareness for multimedia applications (video on demand, live broadcast,
3DTV, IPTV, social aspects, sensors, GPS, semantics, energy
efficiency)

– Content and context aware quality measurements (user generated& professional
content, live& on demand)

– Assessing and supporting QoE in ubiquitous scenarios
(constant and variable in influence factors).

* Research topics
The central research question of the workshop consists in determining key elements (including content and context information) for assessing and supporting QoE ubiquitously: These questions include, but are not limited to
the following topics:

– QoE in ubiquitous scenarios
– Context awareness
– Subj/ective and objective quality evaluation in the context of use, context-aware solutions
(situation specificity, interactivity, user-generated& professional content)
– Interplay between ubiquitous delivery and QoE support – 3D Multimedia and Free ViewPoint
– QoE support for interactive multimedia
