5G!Drones 2nd GA Meeting in Cosmote premises

5G!Drones H2020 project objective is to trial several UAV and drone use-cases taking advantage of the eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC services/slices that experimental 5G facilities across Europe, such as 5GENESIS, 5G-EVE and others, are offering.

Towards this, 5G!Drones project has specified business-wise valid use cases in the Drones market and industry, which will showcase efficiently the added value and advances by using 5G technologies.

NCSR “Demokritos” delegation at 5G!Drones project contributes actively on the successful execution of drones experiment in 5GENESIS platform, reassuring the assessment of KPIs related both with the 5G platform itself and the drone/UAV itself.

The project will feature Network Slicing as the key component to simultaneously run the three types of UAV services on the same 5G infrastructure (including the RAN, back/fronthaul, Core), demonstrating that each UAV application runs independently and does not affect the performance of other UAV applications, while covering different 5G services.

5G!Drones is a 5G-PPP project.

5GENESIS experimentation methodology at Global 5G Event in Valencia

In mid-June Valencia hosted two major ICT events, the Global 5G Event and the EuCNC conference. The so-called #Valencia5Gweek had a great success, since scientists and engineers all over the world gathered and presented their latest advances in the 5G field.

Among the various topics presented, I honored to be invited in the main track of the Global 5G Event in order to present the principles of the 5GENESIS experimentation methodology, which has been successfully used in phase 1 of the planned experiments.

The session was dedicated to 5G KPI measurement and how 5G KPIs can be measured in real environments, which is one of the core topics of 5GENESIS project. Moreover, the same methodology will be also used as part of some vertical industries tests that will be executed in the framework of ICT-19 projects on top of 5GENESIS infrastructure, such as 5G!Drones project.

The defined methodology is based on a modular and hierarchical approach, as presented in slide #4.

More specifically, an experiment is directly related to a target metric, which impacts the achieved QoE. Each metric in turn is dependent on one or more KPIs, from which on should be the target KPI and the rest are complementary ones that may have an indirect impact on the target KPI. Finally, in order to measure the KPI, specific test cases are defined under different usage scenarios, which are also dependent on the various flavors and configurations of the underlying slice.

5G!DRONES Kick-off Meeting at Thales in France

The 5G!Drones kick off meeting took place 10-12 June in Paris, France.

5G!Drones aim is to test and validate several UAV use-cases (https://5gdrones.eu/use-case-scenarios/) covering eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC 5G services, and to validate 5G KPIs for supporting such challenging use-cases. The project will drive the UAV verticals and 5G networks to a win-win position, on one hand by showing that 5G is able to guarantee UAV vertical KPIs, and on the other hand by demonstrating that 5G can support challenging use-cases that put pressure on network resources, such as low-latency and reliable communication, massive number of connections and high bandwidth requirements, simultaneously. 5G!Drones (https://5gdrones.eu/) will build on top of the 5G facilities provided by the ICT-17 projects and a number of support sites, while identifying and developing the missing components to trial UAV use-cases.

ICT-19-2019 InfoDay: Presentation of 5GENESIS project

On 14 September 2018, I had the privilege to present the 5GENESIS project at the ICT-19-2019 InfoDay in Brussels (link). The next big challenge for the 5G PPP community is to respond to the H2020 ICT-19 call for Advanced 5G validation trials across multiple vertical industries by 14th November  2018.

To facilitate learning about the ICT-19 call, and the expected working relationships with the new  ICT-17 projects, an information event is organised on 14th September 2018.  This 5G PPP ICT-19 Info day  is hosted by the European Commission in Brussels (Albert Borschette Conference Center).
